This week at Al’s Hideaway has been a little quieter than usual. We’re expecting some much-needed rain, so we had to cancel

          FRY-DAY

this week — but don’t worry, we’ll be back at it next Friday!

In the meantime, we’ve been doing a little spring cleaning around the campground and getting things ready for one of the biggest events of the season —

. It won’t be long before the rumble of motorcycles fills these roads again.

Our Story – Turning the Dream into Dirt

Last week we left off right after finding what we believed could be the perfect property.

So we decided to make an offer.

And just like that… the seller accepted

          right on the spot

          .

          Suddenly things got real.

Al’s Hideaway was no longer just a dream floating around in our heads — it officially had a home. Now the real work could begin.

After closing on the property, the first challenge was simple:

figure out what we actually had.

The land was thick. Overgrown. Cedar everywhere. You could barely walk through parts of it.

Jennifer was working on a project down in Corpus Christi at the time, so every weekend we would meet out at the property. We'd camp, clear brush, cut cedar, and whenever conditions allowed — we'd burn.

Our “camp” was about as simple as it gets.

. If the weather got bad, we’d climb into the Jeep and sleep there instead.

Every weekend it was Jennifer and me, along with

, and usually a friend or two who would swing by to lend a hand. Little by little the place started opening up.

You could finally begin to see the shape of the land.

          The possibilities.

Once we had it opened up enough to really understand the terrain, we brought in

Jason with Yellow Dog Land Clean-Up

           — and what that man could do with equipment in a week or two was nothing short of amazing. Areas that had taken us months to fight through suddenly began to look like a real property.

Now we could finally see it.

          The roads.
The cabin sites.
The spaces where people would gather.

The next step was finalizing the layout and design so we could start crunching real numbers.

And let me tell you… designing a campground sounds simple until you try to agree on exactly how it should look.

Stay tuned for next week’s chapter to find out

how many arguments it took to finalize the design.

          Until then…

          Happy Trails.
Be Safe & God Bless.

          This Week at Al's Hideaway

We had a good week here at the campground — and we actually got to sneak away and ride a little.

We rode a section of the

          BDR-X Hill Country

, and it reminded me why we chose this place to begin with. The Hill Country is rustic, adventurous, and ideal for touring on two wheels. The main roads are beautiful, no doubt about it — but when you ease off onto the back roads and venture into the countryside, something changes.

          It gets quiet.

          Peaceful.

Scenic in a way that makes you slow down whether you meant to or not.

And it’s not just for motorcycles. Jeeps and other off-road vehicles absolutely shine out there. There’s something special about exploring the backcountry, taking the long way around, and finding views most folks never see.

If you’re thinking about coming out and want someone to show you around — we’ve got you covered. We know these roads, and we love sharing them.

Last week, I left you with a question.

Andrea from Cowgirl Realty had called, excited as could be. She said she’d found the perfect property. It checked every box — the location, the size, the layout. Everything.

But like my pappy always said,
“If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.”

          So we scheduled a visit.

Driving out there for the first time, we were equal parts excited and cautious. After three months of searching, hoping, and almost settling, we weren’t about to get carried away.

Following the GPS, it brought us in off Timber Creek… straight to a gravel hill that was way too steep for us. Heartbreaking. We just looked at each other thinking, well, that’s that.

Then we realized — there was another way in.

          Excitement level back up.

When we finally found the actual property, it was so grown up you could barely walk through it. We drove our Jeep up the dry creek bed just to get a glimpse of part of it. And the more we saw, the more excited we got.

We called Andrea to let her know we were there. She wasn’t far away and came right out. She told us she had flown over the property in her plane and believed that once it was cleared and cleaned up, it would be perfect.

The next day, Jennifer drove the Jeep back toward the center of the property. I grabbed a pistol, a Kaiser blade, and my faithful pitbull Betty, and started cutting my way in. Jennifer stayed in the Jeep honking the horn so I could follow the sound.

It was thick. Grown up. Rough.

By the time Betty and I fought our way back out, I thought she might bite me for dragging her through that mess.

But in the middle of all that brush…

          There was flat ground.
Natural grass.
Big trees.

          And I could see it.

The layout I had carried in my head for months — it fit.

          That’s when I knew.

          Andrea had done it.

          Perfect location.
Perfect geographic layout.
Big trees.
Room to breathe.

          This was it.

We went to eat and talk it through with Andrea. Swung by the Chicken Coop, had a few drinks, and then back to the hotel to go over every detail. The next morning, Sunday, we met at the property.

          We made an offer.

          Andrea turned it in.

          Now we were really excited.

And that’s where we’ll stop for this week.

          Until next Sunday…

          Happy Trails.

This week at Al’s Hideaway was a simple one — and sometimes simple is good.

One thing we’re really excited about is something happening just

          six minutes down the road

           . They’re building a brand-new state park —

Albert and Bessie Kronkosky State Natural Area

           — and we couldn’t be more thrilled.

Al’s Hideaway is the closest glamping campground to it. In fact, we’re the closest campground, period.

We’re currently hosting the company tasked with building the trails, and just in conversation, I’ve learned a lot about trail building. These guys take it personally. There’s pride in what they’re doing. Coming out of the construction industry myself, it’s refreshing to talk shop with craftsmen who care about quality — the kind who take pride in putting their name on a finished product.

          That’s something I understand.

We’ll keep everyone updated as things move toward the grand opening. It’s going to be a great addition to the area and another reason the Hill Country keeps getting better.

          Al’s Hideaway had its name.

It had its home — the Texas Hill Country.

Now came the search for the right piece of land.

I already had it pictured in my mind — how the campground would be laid out, where the cabins would sit, how the roads would wind through the property. I had a pretty good idea of what it needed to look like.

Jennifer took the lead on the property search.

Looking back at all the signs and all the doors that opened at just the right time, there’s no doubt in our minds this was meant to be. We are so blessed. There were so many moments — miracles, if you will — that made this possible.

And one of the first miracles was

          Andrea at Cowgirl Realty

          .

She came along at the perfect time. With her knowledge and determination, there was never a doubt we would eventually find the right place.

After three months of looking at properties, we were about worn out. We were close to settling for something that wasn’t quite right — a “good enough” piece of land.

          Then Andrea called.

She was excited. She said she had found it. The perfect property for us.

We went to look at it — the location, the size, the shape. It checked every single box.

But like my pappy always said,
“If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.”

          And this one?
It seemed almost too good.

Had Andrea really found the perfect property?

Next week, I’ll tell you about our first visit to see it.

This week at Al’s Hideaway slowed down a bit after the excitement of Mardi Gras. The beads are put away, the float is parked, and we’re catching our breath — but the weather has been absolutely perfect for riding.

in full swing, there’s no shortage of reasons to head to the Hill Country.

, that would be the perfect time to do it. Ride all day, meet up at the rally in the evening, and relax back at Al’s Hideaway. That’s what Basecamp living is all about.

          So we had the vision.
We had the dream.
But where would we build it?

We started our LLC and originally looked toward the Gulf Coast. The idea of coastal camping sounded incredible — until reality showed up. Insurance, permits, regulations, and all the costs that follow coastal property made it clear pretty quickly… that wasn’t going to be our starting point.

So we began looking at the Ozarks.

Then one weekend, we came out to the Texas Hill Country with friends to ride. Somewhere between the curves, the conversation started. The riding was incredible. The scenery felt right. And then it hit us — the biggest difference between the Ozarks and the Hill Country was simple:

In the Hill Country, you can ride year-round.

          That changed everything.

That weekend, without any big announcement or dramatic moment, we knew —

The Hill Country would be the home of Al’s Hideaway.

Now the question wasn’t where in the world?
It was which piece of dirt?

And that’s when the real estate hunt began...

(We’ll pick up there next Sunday.)

          Until then…

          Wishing Happy Trails.

Y’all be safe & God bless.

This week at Al’s Hideaway was anything but quiet. The weather couldn’t have been better,

for hosting such an incredible celebration. We’re proud to have been part of it, floats and all.

With all that activity, it feels like a good time to start answering one of the questions we get asked the most:

Who is Al, and how did Al’s Hideaway come to be?

Al’s Hideaway didn’t start as a business plan. It started as a story.

He was part of the Greatest Generation, shaped by the Roaring Twenties, the hardships of the Great Depression, and service during World War II. But beyond all of that, he was a man who believed in family, time together, and getting out into nature.

The dream started to take real shape during a motorcycle trip through the Ozarks. Camped on top of

, Jennifer and I found ourselves talking about campgrounds — what we liked, what we’d change, and what felt right. At one point, she asked if I thought I could build a campground of our own. I told her, “If you can dream it, I can build it.” She said she dreamed big. I told her I could build big.

When we got home, the dreaming turned into planning. We started designing, researching, and trying to figure out where something like this could exist. We didn’t have land yet, and we didn’t have all the answers — but we had a vision, and that was enough to get started.

And we’re looking ahead. The Hill Country calendar is filling up fast, with

This story isn’t finished. It’s still being written — one trip, one guest, and one week at a time.

This week at Al’s Hideaway was a quiet one. Cold Hill Country weather has a way of slowing everything down, and weeks like this give us time to reflect — not just on what’s ahead, but on where we came from.

This week at Al’s Hideaway reminded us that out here in the Hill Country, plans are always subject to change.

A strong winter storm rolled in and forced us to cancel our catfish fry. We hated having to do it, but safety always comes first. Sometimes the best thing you can do is button things up, keep the coffee hot, and let the weather pass on through.

Even with the cold and the quiet, this week gave us time to slow down, regroup, and look ahead — because the next few weeks are shaping up to be big ones around here.

Weeks like this remind me that Al’s Hideaway isn’t just about what happens on any single day — it’s about the community, the adventures, and the stories that keep rolling in, rain or shine.

When people search for cabins, RV sites, or campgrounds in Bandera County, they’re often looking for more than a place to sleep. They want peace, connection, comfort, and a genuine Hill Country experience. That’s exactly what inspired us to create

What Makes Us Unique: The Al’s Hideaway Difference

Bandera County has many places to stay — but none quite like us. Here’s what sets Al’s Hideaway apart:

          1. A Family-Built, Family-Owned Experience

We didn’t buy a campground — we built one. Every detail reflects our values, our story, and our commitment to hospitality.

          2. A Community-Centered Atmosphere

Guests often tell us they arrive as strangers and leave as friends. That’s not an accident — it’s the heart of what we do.

          3. Handcrafted Cabins with Real Character

Our cabins feel like home, not rentals. They’re warm, inviting, and built to last.

          4. A Peaceful 20-Acre Setting

You get the quiet of the Hill Country with easy access to Bandera, Boerne, Medina Lake, and San Antonio.

          5. Top-Rated Guest Satisfaction

          Our reviews consistently highlight:

           Cleanliness

           Hospitality

           Peaceful atmosphere

We take pride in delivering an experience guests want to return to year after year.

          Why Guests Keep Coming Back

People choose Al’s Hideaway because it feels different — more personal, more peaceful, more meaningful. Whether you’re roasting marshmallows under the stars, relaxing on a cabin porch, or sharing stories around the fire, you’ll feel the difference the moment you arrive.

This isn’t just a place to stay.

          It’s a place to breathe.

          A place to reconnect.

A place to feel at home.

began as a segment of the now-abandoned Fredericksburg & Northern Railway. Since train service ceased in 1942, the tunnel has transformed into a thriving bat refuge. From May to October, up to three million Mexican free-tailed bats and several thousand cave myotis bats emerge nightly to feed on local insects, creating a breathtaking natural display. Park rangers host guided evening programs that offer insights into bat behavior, while designated viewing areas ensure an immersive yet respectful experience. With daytime access free and bat-viewing tickets required after 5 p.m.—available online up to sixty days in advance—planning ahead is crucial to witness this spectacular event.

Created in the late 1980s by Al Shepperd and Doug Hill, this concrete homage to England’s prehistoric monument occupies a spot near the Hill Country Arts Foundation. The replica measures about 90 percent the size of the original, complemented by two nearly 13-foot-tall Easter Island Moai heads—Shepperd’s creative nod to global antiquity. Discovered on March 27, 1960 by St. Mary's University students Orion Knox Jr., Preston Knodell, Al Brandt, and Joe Cantu, the caverns opened on July 3, 1964 and were lauded by Governor John Connally as “a jewel in the crown of Texas attractions.” Today, visitors can explore vast limestone chambers adorned with stalactites, stalagmites, soda straws, flowstones, and chandeliers, up to 180 feet below ground. Tours range from standard guided expeditions to adventurous spelunking excursions. Above ground, zip lines, ropes courses, and seasonal concerts and lantern-light tours add to the appeal.

Highlights include a Japanese midget submarine, a Kawanishi N1K floatplane, and PT boat PT-309; the museum’s archives and research center offer extensive primary materials for scholars. In April 2025, the museum made headlines by exchanging its authentic WWII-era Japanese Type 97 medium tank with Japan, acquiring a Type 95 light tank replica for interactive exhibitions in return.

Formed of stained pink granite dating back millions of years, its surface creaks and groans as temperatures shift—phenomena long attributed to ghostly activity typical of Tonkawa, Apache, and Comanche oral histories. Legends speak of “ghost fires,” spiritual presences, and tales of a pale conquistador swallowed by the rock. Indigenous use of the site, including thousands of years of habitation and dry-rock mortars, attests to its cultural importance. Visitors encounter a network of trails leading to the summit—an ideal vantage point for sunrise and stargazing—and can experience the park’s vibrant spring flower blooms and prehistoric vernal pools supporting fairy shrimp.

Mexican free-tailed bats and cave myotis bats, renowned for their emergence from Old Tunnel, are vital components of the Hill Country ecosystem. The former species, in particular, are famous for their nightly insect consumption and dramatic aerial shows. While Bracken Cave—north of San Antonio—hosts the world’s largest bat colony, Old Tunnel’s bat population remains significant and integral to regional biodiversity. Conservation efforts, led by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, ensure the protection of these species and maintain educational programs to raise public awareness.

For the most rewarding experience, plan visits according to each site’s seasonal highlights. Bat viewing runs from May through October at Old Tunnel, while Stonehenge II is accessible year-round alongside arts programming. Natural Bridge Caverns draw crowds in summer, though spelunking options are available year-round. The Pacific War museum welcomes visitors daily except Tuesdays, and Enchanted Rock’s trails are best enjoyed in cooler months to avoid summer heat. Booking in advance is recommended for bat programs and caves; pack layered clothing, sturdy shoes, a headlamp or flashlight for caves, and binoculars or a stargazing setup for high-ground vistas. Bandera offers a range of accommodations, from cabins to dude ranches, with eateries serving Texan staples—notably barbecue and Tex-Mex fusions—perfect for fueling up between adventures.

Nestled on the banks of the Medina River just northwest of San Antonio, Bandera proudly earns its nickname as the “Cowboy Capital of the World.” This moniker isn’t mere marketing—it’s a living, breathing cowboy experience. Historic hitching posts dot Main Street, and guests arrive on horseback to enjoy live two-step music in honky-tonk bars while local cowboys perform rodeo shows and gunfight reenactments. Frontier Times Museum, showcasing artifacts from the Great Western Cattle Trail, preserves the town’s rugged heritage. Staying at a dude ranch offers authentic Western nights under the stars, complete with chuck-wagon breakfasts, trail rides, trick roping, and even steer riding.

Founded by German settlers in 1846, Fredericksburg retains its heritage through charming fachwerk architecture, traditional schnitzels, and Oktoberfest celebrations. Lined with boutiques, galleries, and German cafes, Main Street mirrors the town’s cultural pride. More than just a quaint destination, Fredericksburg anchors Texas wine country as part of the Texas Hill Country AVA—a sprawling appellation founded in 1988. With over 80 wineries—Becker, Grape Creek, William Chris, Pedernales, and Messina Hof among them—on scenic Wine Road 290, it ranks second in the U.S. for wine-tourism revenue. Visitors can stroll vineyards, savor local varietals, and join seasonal events like grape stomps and harvest festivals.

Luckenbach, an unincorporated gem southeast of Fredericksburg, was born from German-Texan roots in the 1840s. Its post office closed in 1971, but in 1970, visionary John “Hondo” Crouch revitalized the town—buying the dance hall, saloon, and general store and launching quirks like chili cook-offs and world fairs. The 1973 live recording of Viva Terlingua with Jerry Jeff Walker at the dance hall sealed its place in outlaw country lore. When Waylon Jennings released “Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)” in 1977, the town’s legend cemented. Today, with just a handful of residents, the saloon still buzzes nearly every day with pickers’ circles, concerts, and the mantra, “Everybody’s somebody in Luckenbach.” It offers genuine Hill Country music culture in its purest form.

A tranquil presence on the Guadalupe River, Ingram is home to the esteemed Hill Country Arts Foundation. The outdoor Smith-Ritch Point Theatre, standing since 1959, enthralls audiences with theatrical performances and musicals in a riverside setting. The Foundation’s gallery and stone-carved replica of Stonehenge II—open freely to wanderers—highlight the region’s creative spirit. Though recent floods severely damaged the venue, it remains a cornerstone of local artistic life, supported by community resilience. Beyond riverside art, Ingram’s surrounding woods beckon visitors to hike, fish, or embrace a peaceful escape in nature.

The ideal time to visit these towns is spring through autumn, when wildflowers bloom and festivals abound—Cowboy Mardi Gras in Bandera, wine events in Fredericksburg, and weekend concerts in Luckenbach. Begin your loop in Bandera, meander through Fredericksburg’s vineyards, detour to Luckenbach for an afternoon jam session, and end with an evening performance or river walk in Ingram before returning to Bandera. Pack layers for hill country evenings, comfortable boots for two-stepping or exploring ranch trails, and a refillable water bottle—especially in summer. Respectively, bring a guitar to Luckenbach, a camera for scenic vineyard vistas, and an umbrella during rainy spells. Car travel is essential; rental from San Antonio or Austin is the most convenient way to navigate the region.

The Texas Hill Country, nestled in central Texas, has emerged as one of the nation’s most compelling American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), boasting nearly 200 wineries that stretch from Austin and San Antonio to the rolling terrain around Bandera. Though Bandera itself is famed as the “Cowboy Capital of the World,” its proximity to this flourishing wine region makes it an ideal base for exploring world-class vineyards. From the first Spanish mission plantings in the 1600s to vineyards planted today along limestone hills, the Hill Country blends history, terroir, and innovation to offer a wine country that surprises and delights.

Spanning over nine million acres and established as an AVA in 1991, the Texas Hill Country region showcases a diverse terroir ranging from Edwards Plateau limestone to sandy loam soils. The warm daytime heat tempered by cool nights fosters optimal grape ripening, while indigenous varietals such as Viognier, Tempranillo, and Aglianico reflect Mediterranean climates. Once known for Prohibition-era setbacks, the region revived in the 1970s and has since grown to more than 8,000 planted acres, further establishing Texas as the fifth-largest U.S. wine producer.

Housed in Texas’s largest underground limestone cellar, the winery operates sustainably through geothermal cooling, rainwater harvesting, composting, and integrated vineyard pest control. Visitors based in Bandera can explore a curated selection of wineries within 30 to 60 minutes. Start at Pedernales Cellars for a cave tour and sustainable wines. Head north to Becker Vineyards, where lavender fields and medals await. Return south toward Austin to visit Duchman Family Winery and savor Italian varietals in a Tuscan-style tasting room. Conclude at Kuhlman Cellars for vineyard tours and educational tastings.

Many wineries offer trail passes or wine-club memberships to save on tastings. Texas law permits wine transportation, but hiring a local driver or joining a wine tour ensures safe, stress-free travel. Weekends are popular: reservations, especially for tours or seated tastings, are strongly recommended.

Texas Hill Country merges rugged cowboy heritage with cultivated winemaking. Within easy reach of Bandera, the region offers terroir-driven wines, family-run estates, and tasting experiences rooted in Mediterranean varietals and Texas flair. From Pedernales’s thoughtful sustainability to Becker’s award-winning tradition and Duchman’s varietal innovation, each winery tells its own story. Few road adventures match the variety and beauty of scenic drives in Texas Hill Country, especially in the region near Bandera. From the rugged twists of the Twisted Sisters to the floral vistas of Willow City Loop and the dramatic limestone ridges of the Devil’s Backbone, this area draws drivers, motorcyclists, and explorers eager to experience its natural wonders. Each route offers a unique perspective on the landscapes that make Hill Country a legendary Texas destination.

Setting the Scene: Bandera as a Starting Point

Bandera, known as the “Cowboy Capital of the World,” sits about 50 miles northwest of San Antonio. Its small-town charm, western history, and welcoming atmosphere make it an ideal starting point for scenic road trips through Texas Hill Country. Visitors often find themselves drawn to Bandera’s local eateries, country shops, and historic attractions before heading out to explore the surrounding byways.

The Twisted Sisters is a famous network of three ranch-to-market roads—RM 335, RM 336, and RM 337—forming a loop of about 100 miles through the heart of Hill Country. The most celebrated section is RM 337, running from Medina to Camp Wood. This segment features more than 65 sharp curves within a 15-mile stretch, making it a favorite for motorcycle and car enthusiasts seeking both challenge and beauty. Along the way, travelers encounter steep climbs, dramatic ridge views, canyons, and minimal guardrails, all set against a backdrop of oak and juniper-covered hills.

RM 337 is especially well known for passing through a region dubbed the “Swiss Alps of Texas,” where rolling hills and striking limestone formations evoke a distinctly Alpine landscape. Key stops along this drive include the Lone Star Motorcycle Museum in Vanderpool and the Frio Canyon Motorcycle Stop in Leakey, offering rest and refreshments to travelers.

Located northeast of Bandera and just outside Fredericksburg, the Willow City Loop is a 13-mile stretch of country road celebrated for its spring wildflowers. During March and April, fields along this route burst with bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush, coreopsis, and phlox, attracting photographers and nature lovers from across Texas. The drive also features scenic rock outcrops, deep canyons, and wide-open vistas that highlight the region’s geological variety.

Because the Willow City Loop passes entirely through private property, visitors are asked to remain on the road and avoid stopping on the roadside or entering fields, especially during wildflower season. The best time to visit for fewer crowds is on a weekday morning, as weekends and peak bloom periods can bring heavier traffic.

The nickname “Swiss Alps of Texas” applies to the section of RM 337 between Leakey and Camp Wood, where the road climbs and descends through steep canyons, tight switchbacks, and panoramic overlooks. The landscape’s resemblance to the European Alps is most evident in spring, when wildflowers accent the rocky terrain and deep green valleys spread below the road.

Travelers along this route may also spot the Frio River winding through the canyons, and several overlooks provide space to stop and enjoy the sweeping views. The “Swiss Alps of Texas” section is both visually impressive and a highlight for drivers looking to experience the Hill Country’s most dramatic scenery.

To the east of Bandera lies the Devil’s Backbone, a winding limestone ridge route just outside Wimberley. This drive offers dramatic views of the Wimberley Valley, rugged hills, and wooded canyons. The road is paved and well-maintained but features tight curves and changes in elevation that keep drivers engaged.

The route pairs well with other Hill Country drives, creating a varied and memorable driving experience across the region.

The most popular time for scenic drives in Texas Hill Country is spring, when bluebonnets and other wildflowers blanket the roadsides, especially on the Willow City Loop and near the “Swiss Alps of Texas” section. Peak bloom typically occurs from late March through April, depending on the year’s rainfall and temperatures.

Autumn brings a different palette, with Lost Maples State Natural Area lighting up in shades of red and gold, and milder weather making the roads comfortable for all-day exploring. Summers can be hot, but early morning or late afternoon drives offer dramatic sunlight on the region’s distinctive limestone ridges and canyons.

is a well-known show cave about 18 miles from Pipe Creek, south of Boerne. The cave has welcomed visitors since 1932 and is known as one of Texas’s oldest public caverns. It is part of the Glen Rose Formation, and the cave’s passages reach up to 132 feet deep, with a half-mile of walkable corridors. Inside, the temperature remains cool year-round, usually between 60 and 63 degrees. Visitors can spot classic cave formations like soda straws, stalactites, and flowstones, plus evidence of ancient coral reefs along the walls. The cave is also home to unique wildlife, including the Cascade Caverns salamander, a rare species found only in this region, and colonies of tricolored bats. Cascade Caverns offers several tour options, including standard guided tours, aquifer tours, and a popular flashlight tour after dark. The tours usually last about an hour and are best for families with children over age five, since walking paths are uneven and some crouching is required. The cave is not wheelchair accessible, and pets are not allowed on tours. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and a light jacket for comfort.
