Best Restaurants and Bars in Bandera County

Owner

Bandera County, located in the Texas Hill Country, is known for its strong Western heritage and small-town atmosphere. The area has a reputation for good food, casual bars, and live music. Here are five local spots where you can find classic Texas meals, popular drinks, and local music.

A cowboy bar is located on the side of a building.

11th Street Cowboy Bar is one of the best-known bars in Bandera. It’s a large venue with a relaxed setting and often hosts live country music. The bar is famous for its jet-cooled dance floor, which is unique in Texas. Every Wednesday, they host Steak Night where visitors can bring their own steak to grill, and there is live music throughout the week. The bar attracts both locals and tourists, and it is often recommended for anyone looking for a real Texas honky-tonk.

OST Restaurant, also known as the Old Spanish Trail Restaurant, has been open since 1921 and is the oldest restaurant in Bandera County. The restaurant serves classic comfort food like chicken-fried steak, fried catfish, and Tex-Mex favorites such as enchiladas and fajitas. OST Restaurant is family friendly and decorated with Western memorabilia, including a room dedicated to John Wayne. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day.

Brick’s River Café is located next to the Medina River and offers indoor and patio seating with a view of the water. The café serves a wide variety of American dishes, including burgers, steaks, seafood, and sandwiches. On Thursdays, they offer all-you-can-eat catfish, and there is a breakfast buffet on weekends. Brick’s River Café also provides catering for events.

TJ’s at The Old Forge is a full-service restaurant and bar in a historic building on Main Street. The menu features steaks, burgers, salads, and other American favorites. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating, including three patios. There are bars on both levels of the building, and sports games are shown on large-screen TVs. The attached Cowgirl Coffee Shop serves coffee drinks and breakfast items in the morning.

Arkey Blue’s Silver Dollar Saloon is the oldest honky-tonk in Texas, operating since the 1930s. The bar is easy to miss from the street, as its entrance is a red door next to the Bandera General Store. Inside, you’ll find country music memorabilia and a sawdust-covered floor. Arkey Blue’s often has live music, especially on weekends, and has hosted many well-known country musicians over the years.

These restaurants and bars are a big part of what makes Bandera County known for its friendly, small-town feel. As of mid-2025, all of these places are open and continue to serve locals and visitors. They offer straightforward menus, relaxed atmospheres, and a genuine Texas experience without the need for fancy extras. Bandera County’s food and bar scene is simple, honest, and rooted in tradition.

Who is Al?

This week at Al’s Hideaway reminded us that out here in the Hill Country, plans are always subject to change. A strong winter storm rolled in and forced us to cancel our catfish fry. We hated having to do it, but safety always comes first. Sometimes the best thing you can do is button things up, keep the coffee hot, and let the weather pass on through. Even with the cold and the quiet, this week gave us time to slow down, regroup, and look ahead — because the next few weeks are shaping up to be big ones around here. Coming up the first weekend of February , we’ll be rolling into one of our favorite events of the year — Cowboy Mardi Gra . We’re proud to say Al’s Hideaway will once again be part of the parade, with our float ready to roll and the Al’s Hideaway Hippie Crew fully on point. (Which we are completely booked, sorry.) This year, we’re doing something extra special by adding a Kids Float , and we couldn’t be more excited to see the little ones take part in the fun. That same Sunday, the action continues back here at the Hideaway with our Chili Cook-Off and Super Bowl Party . Good food, friendly competition, and football on the big screen — that’s a pretty solid Hill Country Sunday if you ask me. Have you made your Valentine's Reservation? We have a little special going on Valentine's Weekend, buy 2 wine glasses and get a complimentary bottle of our favorite Hill Country Wine!! And if that wasn’t enough, on February 18th we’ll be welcoming some of our German guests and escorting a guided motorcycle tour of the Three Twisted Sisters . It’s one of the best rides Texas has to offer, and everyone is welcome to join in. Whether you’re riding with us or just stopping by to visit, it’s going to be a great day to show off what the Hill Country is all about. Weeks like this remind me that Al’s Hideaway isn’t just about what happens on any single day — it’s about the community, the adventures, and the stories that keep rolling in, rain or shine. We appreciate everyone who sticks with us through weather delays and changing plans, and we can’t wait to see y’all out here as things kick back into full gear. Until next Sunday, Al Wishing Happy Trails. Y’all be safe & God bless.
