The Hill Country is renowned for its rolling limestone hills, shaded cedar breaks, meandering creek crossings, and panoramic vistas that stretch for miles. These diverse terrains offer opportunities for both novices and seasoned riders to spend time in nature. Traveling by horseback through hilltops, wooded valleys, and river corridors often provides visitors with an opportunity to observe wildlife and experience the peacefulness that this part of Texas is known for.

Bandera has fully embraced its nickname as the “Cowboy Capital of the World.” Its western heritage is visible throughout the town, with hitching posts lining Main Street, weekend gunfight reenactments, historic cattle trails, and authentic cowboy bars. The presence of horses remains a constant in everyday life, and local signage even reminds motorists to watch for horseback riders—a clear sign of the ongoing bond between the community and its equestrian traditions.

One of the most popular stables in the region is Juniper Hill Stables, located at 9061 Bandera Creek Road. The facility sits on a private 230-acre ranch and offers guided trail rides through varied terrain that includes creeks, plateaus, and gentle hills. Riders have access to over 50 miles of trails and can expect to see abundant wildlife along with sweeping Hill Country views. The staff at Juniper Hill Stables are known for their friendly, knowledgeable guides and their calm, well-trained horses, creating a welcoming and comfortable environment for guests.

Another notable outfitter is Outlaw Outfitters, which provides horseback adventures across 5,400 acres of remote hills within the Hill Country State Natural Area. They offer guided rides ranging from one to six hours, including special options like sunset and riverside rides. Outlaw Outfitters is unique in that they will also bring their horses and guides to private ranches for special events upon request. Guests consistently praise the family-friendly atmosphere, the professionalism of the guides, and the adaptability of rides to different skill levels.

Cross G Ranch Trail Rides specializes in private horseback rides for groups of up to 10 to 12 riders. Located just outside Bandera, the ranch offers customized rides ranging from one to four hours that take guests through forests, creeks, ravines, plateaus, and open land. Led by instructor Ron Griffith, Cross G Ranch matches each horse to the rider’s experience and offers opportunities for trotting and cantering for those who are comfortable. Riders frequently compliment the attentive guides, the variety of terrain, and the peaceful, secluded environment.

Diamond C Stables is situated near Boerne, just off Interstate 10 between Bandera and San Antonio. This stable offers both lessons and one-hour trail rides for riders aged seven and up. Each outing begins with basic training in an arena to ensure riders are comfortable before heading out onto the scenic trails. Horses are carefully matched to each participant’s ability, and trail rides cost around $60 per person. Diamond C Stables is recognized for its family-friendly atmosphere, experienced instructors, and the excellent condition of its horses.

For those planning a horseback riding adventure in Texas Hill Country, spring and fall are considered the best times to visit, as these seasons bring the most comfortable weather and the region’s landscapes are especially beautiful. Reservations are required at all stables and outfitters, with Cross G Ranch asking guests to book at least a day in advance. Riders should dress in long pants, closed-toe shoes or boots, and bring sunscreen and a hat for sun protection. Most outfitters set a minimum age requirement, usually between six and seven years, and have weight limits around 220 to 230 pounds. Trail rides can last from a single hour to a full day, with options for sunset or river routes. Longer rides may include trotting or cantering for those with riding experience, while safety briefings and basic instruction are standard at all facilities, especially at Diamond C Stables and Cross G Ranch.

Who is Al?

This week at Al’s Hideaway reminded us that out here in the Hill Country, plans are always subject to change. A strong winter storm rolled in and forced us to cancel our catfish fry. We hated having to do it, but safety always comes first. Sometimes the best thing you can do is button things up, keep the coffee hot, and let the weather pass on through. Even with the cold and the quiet, this week gave us time to slow down, regroup, and look ahead — because the next few weeks are shaping up to be big ones around here. Coming up the first weekend of February , we’ll be rolling into one of our favorite events of the year — Cowboy Mardi Gra . We’re proud to say Al’s Hideaway will once again be part of the parade, with our float ready to roll and the Al’s Hideaway Hippie Crew fully on point. (Which we are completely booked, sorry.) This year, we’re doing something extra special by adding a Kids Float , and we couldn’t be more excited to see the little ones take part in the fun. That same Sunday, the action continues back here at the Hideaway with our Chili Cook-Off and Super Bowl Party . Good food, friendly competition, and football on the big screen — that’s a pretty solid Hill Country Sunday if you ask me. Have you made your Valentine's Reservation? We have a little special going on Valentine's Weekend, buy 2 wine glasses and get a complimentary bottle of our favorite Hill Country Wine!! And if that wasn’t enough, on February 18th we’ll be welcoming some of our German guests and escorting a guided motorcycle tour of the Three Twisted Sisters . It’s one of the best rides Texas has to offer, and everyone is welcome to join in. Whether you’re riding with us or just stopping by to visit, it’s going to be a great day to show off what the Hill Country is all about. Weeks like this remind me that Al’s Hideaway isn’t just about what happens on any single day — it’s about the community, the adventures, and the stories that keep rolling in, rain or shine. We appreciate everyone who sticks with us through weather delays and changing plans, and we can’t wait to see y’all out here as things kick back into full gear. Until next Sunday, Al Wishing Happy Trails. Y’all be safe & God bless.
